Unstack Columns

Use Unstack Columns to split the contents of a stacked column into two or more shorter columns within your current datasheet or copy the split columns to a new datasheet. For instance, you might unstack a data set so that the Value data for each Group is stored in a separate column.

In the following illustration, the Value column contains the stacked values figures from groups A, B, C, D and E. Unstack Columns splits this column into five separate columns based on the label in the Group column. The data in the Value column are unstacked (split) into the Value_A, Value_B, Value_C, Value_D, Value_E columns.

Some statistical software require a grouping variable, where all data are expected to be in a single column. VisualStat does not require this because data in separate columns can help in understanding the analysis. If you need to share data between VisualStat and statistical software that require grouping variable, then use this function to prepare data prior to import/export.

Data

Data can be numeric, text, or any type of data.
Columns are not required to be the same length.

Example

The data represents cell phone towers' signal strength in various directions by more than one carrier. This data is hypothetical and is simply an example of how the Polar chart is used. The first column represents a cellular service provider company name, followed by angular orientation and signal strength.

The data is being grouped by the chart when plotted. AT&T entries are grouped together as are the Verizon entries.

  1. Open the DataBook summary.vstz
open this data file via the Help / Open Examples menu; it is in the Sample Data
  2. Select the sheet CellPhone
  3. Choose the tab Data, the group Variable and the command Unstack
  4. In Variables to Unstack, select Strength.
  5. In Group Variable, select Company.
  6. Click OK
